Hackney Marsh
There are several places to start exploring the nature reserve and surrounding area. Firstly the nature reserve is eminently suited to wander around. Plants and trees abound. Keep an eye open for a couple of strange structures on posts. They are not sinister invaders but purpose built structures to encourage habitation by Sand Martins. Sand Martins habitually live in riverbanks and the countryside ranger service has constructed these. There are many paths criss-crossing and chances to spot a plethora of species of bird life and plant life. The area can be wet and muddy. There is a path that goes under the railway and meanders along the estuary under the A380 to the Passage House. An excellent place to see the egrets and other waders and waterfowl that live along the river and adjacent marshes. The broken walls by the A380 bridge are the remains of cottages used by families involved in the loading and unloading of lighters using the Stover Canal. From the Passage House there are far reaching views down the estuary towards Teignmouth. Following the road over the railway the path on the right contributes to the circular walk. From the top of the field there are more and higher views over Ware Barton to Teignmouth and Shaldon.
